Free files for laser cutters, in SVG and DXF. Each was tested by code: it cuts as one connected piece, and at 100 mm across no part is thinner than 3 mm, the thickness of common plywood and acrylic.

How the files were chosen

A laser-cut part is only as strong as its thinnest neck. As a rule of thumb, keep every part at least as wide as the sheet is thick. Every design here has a narrowest part of 3 mm or more at 100 mm across, so it survives in 3 mm material at that size, and in thinner material smaller. Each design’s page gives the figure at seven sizes; scale the design up and the necks get wider with it.

Each is also one connected piece. Nothing drops out except the cut-outs, and there are no loose islands to lose in the bed.

Importing into laser software

  • LightBurn: File, Import, and choose the SVG or the DXF. The shapes arrive on one layer; set that layer to Line to cut it.
  • xTool Creative Space: import the SVG and set its processing type to Cut.
  • Glowforge: upload the SVG and choose Cut for the shape.
  • LaserGRBL and others: use the SVG, or the DXF where SVG is not supported.

Kerf and fit

The files are drawn at true size with no allowance for kerf, the width of material the beam burns away. For decorative pieces this does not matter. For parts that must fit each other, measure your kerf on a test cut and offset the outline by half of it.

The solid shapes also engrave well: set the layer to Fill instead of Line.

Questions

SVG or DXF for a laser?

Either. The SVG keeps smooth Bézier curves and is the better choice wherever it is accepted. The DXF stores curves as short straight segments and is for software that does not read SVG.

What size are the files?

Each is 100 mm on its longer side, with real units in the file, and scales to any size. The cut length listed on each design’s page helps estimate cutting time.

Can I engrave a photo instead?

Yes, with the photo to laser engraving converter, which makes a 1-bit PNG at your laser’s resolution.
