Free submarine SVG files

Free submarine SVG files: a modern submarine from the side, a silhouette, a boat on the surface, an old fleet boat with a deck gun, a cute submarine with portholes, a deep sea submersible, a periscope above the waves, a porthole scene, a sonar screen and a submarine with a blank hull for a name.

Or choose one below for its PNG, DXF and cutting sizes.

A long thin boat with thin masts

A submarine is about six times as long as it is deep, so at 100 mm long the modern boat here is only about 40 mm tall from the tip of its periscope to its keel fin, and its hull is 14 mm deep. The masts on the sail are the thinnest parts at about 2 mm wide. They cut cleanly in vinyl from 80 mm long and in card from 100 mm. For wood or acrylic, cut the boat at 150 mm or more, or pick the cute submarine or the deep sea submersible, which have nothing thin on them.

On the submarine from the side the belly below the waterline is one long opening with a rim about 2 mm wide left all round it, so the hull stays whole and a red or grey card laid behind gives a two-colour boat. The five dots behind the sail are hatches about 2 mm across: weed them with a pin, or leave them in if you cut small.

Which submarine for which job

The silhouette and the boat on the surface are the two for layered scenes: one hangs in open water as a single clean shape, the other stands on the flat underside of its waves. The cute submarine and the porthole suit a nursery, a bath toy bag or an ocean party. The submarine with a blank hull takes a name about 60 mm long and 14 mm tall at 100 mm, for a retirement plaque or a model stand.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Is the submarine a real class of boat?

No. The modern boat is a generic one with a round hull, a sail and cross-shaped tail fins, and the old one is a generic fleet boat of the 1940s with a deck gun. Neither carries a hull number, a flag of a real navy or the lines of a named class.

Which submarine is easiest to cut small?

The submarine silhouette and the cute submarine. The silhouette has no openings at all, and the cute one has only three round portholes and a seam. Both hold at 50 mm long in vinyl, though the masts of the silhouette are only about 1 mm wide at that size and need a slow, careful weed.

How do I hang the submarine in a shadow box?

Cut the silhouette from card, glue a strip of clear acetate or a length of thread behind the sail and fix that to the layer above. Because the shape is one piece with no base, it can sit at any depth between the surface layer and the sea bed.
