Thin tubes and how small to go
A stethoscope is nearly all tube, so these designs are slim by nature. The tubes are only a few millimetres wide when a design is 100 mm tall: on the plain stethoscope the narrowest part, an ear tube, is about 3.6 mm. In vinyl and heat transfer that is comfortable down to about 60 mm tall. Below that the ear tubes get hard to weed, so cut slowly and use a fresh blade.
For a badge reel or a small tumbler decal, pick the stethoscope with a heart or the heart with a stethoscope and heartbeat, which carry more solid area. In wood or acrylic keep any of these at 120 mm or more, or the ear tubes will be fragile.
Adding a name or an initial
Two designs are made for lettering. The stethoscope for a name has a long level run of tube: set the name on it in a script or a bold print face, about as tall as the headset. The monogram frame is a ring of tube with an open middle for one to three initials. Weld the letters to the tube if you want everything to lift as one piece.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I add a name to the stethoscope for a name?
Type the name in your cutting software and sit it on the level run of tube between the headset and the chest piece. Let the bottoms of the letters overlap the tube a little and weld, and the name and stethoscope cut as one piece.
Which stethoscope suits a nurse and which a vet?
The nurse stethoscope has a cross in its loop and the vet stethoscope has a heart with a paw print. The plain stethoscope, the heart shaped one and the heartbeat line suit anyone who uses one at work.
Is the chest piece meant to have a hole in it?
Yes. The open middle stands for the diaphragm, and it is what makes the disc read as a chest piece and not a blob. It is one small circle to weed.
