Which note is which
The note with a flag is an eighth note, or quaver. Two of them joined by a beam mean the same thing written a tidier way, and a second beam turns them into sixteenth notes. A filled head with a plain stem is a quarter note, and an open head with a stem is a half note. If the design is for a musician, it is worth getting these right: a music teacher will read them.
The treble clef curls round the second line up from the bottom of the staff, and on the staff designs here it sits exactly there. The bass clef has two dots, which sit either side of the second line down.
Cutting staff lines
Staff lines are the fragile part. On the wavy staff, the blank staff and the staff circle the lines are about 1.8 mm wide when the design is 100 mm across, and they are joined by bar lines, note stems and the clef so the whole thing lifts in one piece. Cut these at 120 mm or wider in vinyl, weed slowly along the lines rather than across them, and for wood or acrylic go to 200 mm or more.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Why does the bass clef come in three pieces?
A bass clef is a curl and two separate dots, and the dots do not touch the curl. Joining them would make it look wrong, so they are left loose. Keep all three on the transfer tape when you lift the design and the spacing stays right.
Can I write a real tune on the blank staff?
Yes. Copy note heads and stems from the set of music notes, shrink them so a head is as tall as the gap between two lines, and place them on the lines and spaces. Weld each stem to the staff so the notes become part of the same piece.
Which design is best for a small earring or charm?
The single music note or the quarter note. Each is one solid piece with a sturdy stem and nothing to weed, so they cut cleanly at 25 to 30 mm tall in leather, acrylic or thin wood.
