How the lens stays in one piece
A camera lens is a set of rings inside one another, and a ring cut all the way round lets its middle fall out. On these cameras the pale ring of the lens is cut in two halves with a small bridge between them, so the dark glass in the middle stays joined to the body and the camera lifts off the mat whole. The bridges sit on a slant, where they read as a reflection.
If you would rather have unbroken rings, use the layered camera: its body, silver parts, glass and glint are separate layers, so nothing needs a bridge. The simple camera icon has a plain round hole for a lens and nothing small to weed, which makes it the one to pick under about 40 mm wide.
Which camera for which project
For a photographer’s gift, the camera with a heart lens, the camera with flowers and the monogram frame are the usual choices. The twin lens camera and the bellows camera on a tripod suit vintage and travel themes, and the movie camera suits film nights. The legs of the two tripods are long and slim, so cut those two designs at 80 mm tall or more in card and wood.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Why does the lens ring have two small gaps in it?
They are bridges. Without them the round middle of the lens would be a loose piece that falls out when you cut or weed. With them the whole camera is a single piece. On a layered project you can leave them out by using the layered camera, which has the ring as its own piece.
Which camera works best as a small sticker or icon?
The simple camera icon. It is a solid body with one round hole and one small window, so it stays clear even at 25 mm wide. The cute camera and the compact camera are good from about 50 mm.
Can I put an initial in the camera monogram frame?
Yes. The ring in the middle is open, so place a letter inside it in your cutting software and cut it from the same sheet or a second colour. Choose a bold letter and make it overlap the ring a little if you want it welded in as part of the same piece.
