Wool in one colour

A sheep is white wool around a dark face, and a one-colour file cannot show that directly. Here the fleece and the face are one solid shape, and a slit about 2 mm wide marks where the face lies over the wool. Cut the sheep from white card and the slit reads as a drawn line; cut it from black vinyl for a window and the scalloped edge alone says sheep.

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The legs are straight pegs about 6 mm wide at that size, so the standing sheep cuts well in vinyl and card down to 40 mm and in 3 mm plywood from about 80 mm. The scallops of the fleece are shallow and round, with no sharp inside corners, which makes these some of the quickest animals in the library to weed.

For a sheep with real wool, cut the silhouette from card, spread glue over the fleece and press on cotton wool or a spiral of chunky yarn, leaving the face and legs bare.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a black sheep and a white flock?

The black sheep file already has two outlined sheep and one solid one on a strip of grass. For a larger flock, cut the plain sheep silhouette several times in white and once in black, and line them up. The sheep outline works as a white sheep on dark paper.

Which file is right for a stock show shirt?

The show lamb. It is drawn shorn, with a long level back, a long neck and the head held high, the way a market lamb is braced for the judge. The woolly silhouette reads as a farm or nursery sheep instead.

Can I use the sheep for a counting sheep mobile?

Yes. Cut the sheep silhouette or the leaping lamb five or six times from stiff card or thin plywood at about 70 mm wide, punch a small hole in the top of each fleece and hang them at different heights. The fence design can sit on a shelf below.
