How the eyes stay in
An owl is mostly eyes, and in a one-colour cut file a pupil in the middle of an eye would be a loose dot that falls out. Here each pupil overlaps the rim of its eye by a little over a millimetre, so the pupil is part of the owl and the white of the eye is a crescent-shaped hole. Nothing needs placing by hand, and the gaze changes with where the pupil touches: down and inwards on the classic owl, straight up on the owl with a heart.
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. At that size the breast feathers and the wing seams are lines a little under 2 mm wide, which cut well in vinyl and card down to about 60 mm tall. Below that, use the owl silhouette, the simple owl or the owl eyes, where the smallest detail is several millimetres across.
Materials that suit an owl
Brown or kraft card over a cream backing gives the classic owl its chest and eyes at once, because the backing shows through every hole. For 3 mm plywood, pick the perched silhouette or the owl on a crescent moon: the branch and the moon carry the thin parts. The mandala owl has about fifty small windows, so give it a sharp blade, a slow speed and 200 gsm card or heavier.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Will the pupils fall out when I cut an owl?
No. Each pupil overlaps the edge of its eye, so it stays joined to the head. The one exception is the layered baby owl, where the eyes are separate pieces on purpose: you stick the dark layer on top of the cream one.
How do I add a letter to the owl monogram frame?
Type your initial in your cutting software, size it to about 40 mm tall for a 100 mm owl, and place it in the round window so it overlaps the rim at the top and bottom. Weld the letter to the owl and the two cut as one piece. A script letter that touches both sides works as well.
Which owl works for Halloween?
The owl silhouette on a branch and the owl on a crescent moon. Cut them from black card for a window, or from black vinyl for a lantern or a treat bag. The owl eyes on their own also work well on a dark door or a pumpkin.
