Cutting fish: scales, spines and hooks
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The fish with scales, spots and stripes have slits about 1.5 mm wide at that size, which a blade cuts well in vinyl and card at 100 mm and up. For anything smaller, or for felt and thin wood, use the fish silhouette or the bass silhouette, which have no inside cuts at all.
The fine parts of a fish are its fin tips, the spines along a bass’s back and the bill of the marlin. These are points, so they do not make the piece weaker, but they lift first on vinyl: weed towards the tips, not away from them, and burnish them down last.
The hooks are drawn heavier than a real hook, about 6.5 mm thick at 100 mm tall, so the barb survives at decal size. On a laser, the fish skeleton and the hooks make good key rings in 3 mm plywood at 70 mm or longer.
Which way the fish face
Most of these fish face right. To turn one round, mirror it in your cutting software; nothing in the drawings is handed. For iron-on vinyl remember the mat is mirrored already, so check the preview before you cut.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which fish is best for a fishing shirt or a tackle box decal?
The leaping largemouth bass and the bass jumping for a hook are the ones drawn for that. In a single colour of iron-on vinyl at 150 to 250 mm they fill a shirt front, and the two crossed hooks make a matching badge for the sleeve or a cap.
Can I add a name to the hook designs?
Yes. The hook on a line leaves clear space to the right of the line for a name, and the hook heart has room inside it for initials or a date. Type the words in your cutting software and cut them with the hook from the same sheet.
How do I weed the scales?
The scales are thin arcs, not closed cells, so there is very little to lift: each arc comes out as a sliver. Use a pin or a weeding hook and work from the head to the tail, the way the scales lie.
