Choosing a cat for your material

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The solid silhouettes (the sitting black cat, the cat from behind, the walking cat and the head) have no inside cuts, so they are the ones for small stickers, glitter card and a first project. The tail is the slimmest part of each: about 5 mm wide on the sitting cats, which holds in vinyl down to a 30 mm cat and in 3 mm plywood from about 80 mm.

The faces have eyes, a nose and whiskers cut through the head. The whisker slits are about 2 mm wide at full size, so cut the face at 80 mm or wider in vinyl and lift the slivers out with a pin. On dark vinyl the holes show the surface behind, which is why a black cat face looks best on a pale mug, wall or shirt.

Black cats for Halloween

The arched-back cat is the Halloween one. Its fur spikes and ear tips are points, and points are the first thing to lift on vinyl, so press them down last and burnish them. For a window, cut it from matt black vinyl at 150 mm or more and add the pair of eyes in yellow on top.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Which cat is easiest to cut small?

The cat head silhouette and the cat sitting from behind. Both are single solid shapes with wide parts everywhere except the ear tips and the tail, so they still cut cleanly at 25 to 30 mm for planner stickers, nail decals and confetti.

How do I give the black cat coloured eyes?

On the cat face the eyes are holes, so put a scrap of yellow or green vinyl behind them, or apply the face over a coloured patch. For the solid silhouettes, cut the pair of cat eyes separately at about a fifth of the width of the head and stick them on top.

Can I put a name inside the cat head frame?

Yes. Open the monogram frame in your cutting software, type the letter or name, size it to fit inside the ring and weld or attach it so it touches the ring on at least two sides. If it does not touch, cut it as a second layer and place it by eye.
