Sizes, materials and the thin parts of an elephant
Every elephant here is 100 mm on its longer side. An elephant is mostly bulk, which makes it one of the easiest animals to cut: the body, head and legs are all wide. The parts to watch are the tail, which is about 2.5 mm wide at that size, and the tip of the tusk. Both hold up in vinyl and card down to about half size. In 3 mm plywood or acrylic keep the side views at 100 mm or longer, because the tail is the first thing to snap.
The ear, the eye and the creases on the trunk are fine cut lines about 1.5 mm wide. In vinyl, lift them out with a pin after the outside is weeded. If you want an elephant with nothing inside to weed at all, use the elephant silhouette or the baby elephant silhouette.
Baby showers and nursery walls
The baby elephant, the sitting calf and the two faces were drawn with baby showers and nurseries in mind. On the cute face and the girl with a bow, the middle of each ear is cut away: glue a piece of pink or patterned paper behind it and the ears gain a second colour without a second cut. For a wall, cut the mother and baby from matt grey vinyl at 300 mm or wider, and add a row of walking elephants in a lighter grey.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Does it matter whether the trunk points up or down?
Only to you. An elephant with a raised trunk is widely given as a good luck charm, which is why the trunk-up elephant and the calves are drawn that way. The silhouette, the outline and the mandala elephant have the trunk down, which is how an elephant stands at rest.
How do I put a name on the monogram elephant?
The window in its side is about 30 mm across when the elephant is 100 mm long. Type an initial in your cutting software, size it to fill the window and let it touch the edge in at least two places, then weld. For a whole name, cut the elephant as it is and stick the name across the window in a second colour.
Which elephant is best for a first project?
The elephant silhouette. It is one outline with no inside cuts, and nothing on it is narrower than the tail. The baby elephant silhouette is just as simple and stays readable at 40 mm, which suits gift tags and cupcake toppers.
