Sizes, materials and what to watch when cutting a dachshund
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side, and for a dachshund the longer side is very much the length: the standing dog is 100 mm long and only about 47 mm tall. Size it by the length. The legs are short and about 6 mm across at full size, so they are strong, and the part to watch is the tail, which tapers to a little over 2 mm at its tip. In 3 mm plywood keep a standing dachshund at 150 mm long or more, or choose the sitting silhouette, whose tail lies along the ground.
The long body is the useful part. On the name frame it carries a window about 43 mm long and 10 mm high at full size, which takes a short name in capitals when the dog is cut 200 mm long or more. On the long haired dachshund the feathering is a row of soft scallops under the chest and belly: they weed easily in vinyl, but sand them lightly if you cut wood.
Which dachshund for which job
The side views are long and low and suit mugs, pencil cases, lead racks and the bottom edge of a sign. The face fills a square for shirts and coasters. The peeking dachshund is the widest and flattest, for car windows and laptop lids. The dachshund through the snow comes as four colours to stack, which is how iron-on vinyl for a Christmas jumper is usually cut.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I put a name inside the dachshund?
Open the dachshund name frame in your cutting software, type the name, and size it so the letters reach from the top edge of the window to the bottom. Weld the letters to the frame so every one touches an edge. Short names of up to six or seven letters fit best.
Is there a long haired dachshund?
Yes. The long haired dachshund has feathering on the ear, chest, belly and legs and a plumed tail held up like a flag. The other side views are smooth haired. For a wire haired dachshund, use the smooth standing dog and weld a small beard under the chin.
How do I make a black and tan dachshund?
Cut the standing dachshund from black, then cut it again from tan and trim the tan copy down to the muzzle, the chest, the four paws and a small spot over the eye. Stick the tan pieces on top. On the face, the two spots over the eyes are already cut out, so tan card behind the face gives the eyebrow marks.
