A hammer for every trade

The claw hammer belongs to carpenters and to every kitchen drawer. The sledgehammer is for breaking things, the wooden mallet for joiners and carvers, who strike chisels with it, and the ball-peen hammer for engineers and metalworkers. The gavel is not a tool at all, but it is the hammer of courts, auctions and committee chairs, and it is searched for as often as the rest.

So choose by the person: hammer and saw for a carpenter, hammer and wrench for a handyman or a repair shop, mallet and chisel for a woodcarver, and the gavel for a newly qualified lawyer.

Cutting notes

A hammer is a heavy head on a slim handle, and the handle is the part to watch. On the claw hammer the shaft is about 7 mm wide when the hammer is 100 mm long, which is safe in vinyl and card at half that size. In wood or acrylic, cut single hammers at 100 mm or more. The tip of the claw is a sharp point: it lifts first on fabric, so press it down well when you apply heat transfer vinyl.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
