Solid faces and line faces

There are two ways to cut a face in one colour. A solid face is a disc with the eyes and mouth removed: it is one piece, it cannot lose a part, and the surface behind shows through as the features. That suits yellow vinyl on a dark shirt, or wood and acrylic. A line face is a ring with the eyes and mouth as separate solid pieces inside it, which suits dark vinyl on a light surface, but the features are loose and need transfer tape to keep their places.

The classic face is here both ways. The other designs say which kind they are in their notes.

Sizes and colours

Every face is 100 mm across at file size. The solid ones have no thin parts and cut cleanly down to about 20 mm, small enough for stickers, nail decals and confetti. On the line faces the ring is 4.6 mm wide, so at 40 mm across it is still nearly 2 mm.

For the familiar yellow face with dark features, cut a plain yellow circle of the same size as a base and lay the line face over it in black. The flower face is already split into three colour layers.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Are these the same as phone emoji?

No. They are our own drawings of the general idea of a smiling face, which has been common property since the 1960s. They do not copy the artwork of any phone, app or company, so the eyes, mouths and proportions will not match a particular emoji set.

How do I make a yellow smiley with black features?

Cut a 100 mm circle in yellow. Then cut the smiley face outline in black and place it on top, or cut the classic solid face in black and use only the three pieces you weed out of it, the eyes and the smile, as the features.

Which face is best for tiny stickers?

The classic solid face, the laughing face and the heart-eyed face. Their openings are large and simple, so they weed quickly even at 20 mm across. Avoid the grunge and cute faces below about 60 mm.
