Shamrock or four-leaf clover
A shamrock has three leaves and is the emblem of Ireland and of St Patrick’s Day. A four-leaf clover is the rare lucky find, and stands for luck rather than for Ireland. For St Patrick’s Day designs the three-leaf shamrock is the correct choice; for good luck cards, exams and new ventures, use the four-leaf clover.
All the leaves here are hearts with their points at the centre. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side.
Cutting and materials
The solid shamrock and the four-leaf clover have no small parts and can be cut as small as 25 mm for confetti and planner stickers. The stem is the narrowest part, about 5 mm wide at file size, so in wood or acrylic keep the whole design above 40 mm or the stem becomes fragile.
The veined designs have a slot down each leaf that is about 1.5 mm wide at file size. In vinyl, weed those slots first, while the rest of the sheet still holds the leaves flat. For glitter iron-on, which hides fine detail, choose a solid design instead.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How many leaves does a shamrock have?
Three. The word comes from the Irish for a young clover, and by tradition St Patrick used its three leaves to explain the Trinity. A clover with four leaves is a four-leaf clover, not a shamrock, though the two are often mixed up on St Patrick’s Day goods.
Which design works for a wooden ornament or a key ring?
The shamrock in a ring: the leaves and the stem all join the ring, so nothing sticks out to snap. The solid shamrock also works if you add a hanging hole in the top leaf.
Can I cut the shamrock in two shades of green?
Yes. Use the layered shamrock, which has a dark base and lighter leaves to stack on it. Or cut any solid shamrock in dark green and its outline in a lighter green, and lay the outline on top.
