Canopy, ribs and a thin shaft

An umbrella is a wide canopy on a very thin stick, and the stick is the part to plan for. Here the shaft is about 3.5 mm wide when the umbrella is 100 mm tall and the handle is thicker again, so the open umbrella cuts cleanly in vinyl from about 60 mm and in card from 80 mm. For wood or acrylic, keep it at 120 mm or more so the shaft does not snap where it leaves the canopy.

The ribs are cut lines a little under 2 mm wide that stop short of the crown and the rim, so the canopy stays in one piece. On the beach umbrellas three whole panels are cut out as stripes. Lay any of them over a second colour and the lines or stripes show through.

Showers, beaches and rainy days

Rain umbrellas are cut for baby showers and bridal showers, spring classroom boards and get well cards. The umbrella with hanging hearts was drawn for shower invitations. The beach umbrella and the beach chair and umbrella suit pool bags, towels and holiday scrapbooks, and both stand on a mound of sand with a level underside, so they can be glued upright by a tab in a layered beach scene.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
