Free mitten SVG files

Free mitten SVG files: single mittens with ribbed, fur and folded cuffs, patterned with snowflakes, hearts, stars and knitted bands, plus pairs on a string, on a line and making a heart. Each is drawn by code as clean closed shapes.

19 designs. Free for personal and commercial use, no sign-up. What you can do with them.

Singles, pairs and which way the thumb points

A mitten is not symmetrical: the thumb is on one side, so a left and a right are mirror images. The single mittens here point their thumbs either way. To make a matching pair from any of them, cut it once as it is and once flipped left to right in your cutting software. The pair on a string, the mittens hanging from a nail, the crossed pair and the two mittens making a heart already have both hands in them and cut as one piece.

The inside corner between thumb and hand is rounded to a radius of about 3.6 mm, so a blade can turn there without lifting the vinyl and a laser does not scorch a sharp notch.

Sizes and materials

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The cuff is parted from the hand by a line about 1.5 mm wide, and the ribs of the knitted cuffs are slots about 2 mm wide, so the ribbed mittens are best at 60 mm tall or more. The mitten silhouette has no holes and works at any size. The knitted stitch mitten and the Fair Isle mitten have the most small holes: keep those near full size, and weed them with a pin.

On the pairs joined by a cord, the cord is the weak point, a little under 2 mm wide at 100 mm. It is fine in vinyl, card and iron-on, but in thin plywood cut those designs at 150 mm or more. For felt, use the silhouette or the stitched felt mitten as a template and add the pattern with thread.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a left and a right mitten?

Cut the mitten once as it comes, then mirror it left to right in your cutting software and cut it again. The designs that show two mittens already contain a left and a right.

What do I put behind the cut-out patterns?

A second colour. Cut the patterned mitten from red, blue or green and stick it over a plain white mitten cut from the mitten silhouette or the outline, so the snowflake, star or stitches show in white. On a window, leave the holes open and the glass shows through.

Can I use a mitten as a gift tag or an ornament?

Yes. Cut the mitten silhouette or the classic knitted mitten from card or 3 mm wood at 70 to 90 mm tall, punch or cut a small hole in the cuff and thread a ribbon through. The plain cuff of the two-colour mitten in pieces leaves room to write a name.
