Cutting ornaments that hang
Most shop-bought baubles are 60 to 80 mm across, so these files need little scaling. Every bauble here has a loop welded to its cap; at 100 mm tall the hole in the loop is 5 to 6 mm across, enough for ribbon or a wire hook. If you scale a bauble below 50 mm, check the loop: its wall is the narrowest part of most designs.
For laser cutting, 3 mm plywood and 3 mm acrylic both work. The blanks and the plain baubles have no fine parts. On the cut-out designs the bridges between holes are the weak points, so cut those at 70 mm or larger in wood.
Vinyl on glass and tile
To decorate a shop-bought ball or an arabesque tile, cut the design from permanent vinyl and size it to the object first. A ball curves in two directions, so keep vinyl for a ball under about half its diameter, or snip the edge so it can lie flat. The arabesque blank here is 80 by 100 mm; measure your tile and scale to match, since tiles differ by maker.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I put a name on an ornament?
Use the split bauble or the monogram frame. On the split bauble, type the name in your cutting software, set it across the gap between the two halves and weld, so the letters join the halves into one piece. The monogram frame leaves the whole middle open for a letter cut from a second colour.
What size should I cut an ornament for a tree?
Between 70 and 90 mm tall suits most trees. Small table trees look better with 40 to 50 mm ornaments: choose the plain round, onion or disc designs at that size, because their parts stay wide.
Can I use the arabesque design on a real arabesque tile?
Yes, as a guide for size and for vinyl. Arabesque tiles are not all the same size, so measure yours across the widest and tallest points and scale the file to fit just inside the edge.
