A crescent with two small ends

A banana is an easy shape to cut: a fat crescent with no holes. What makes it read as a banana and not a moon is the pair of ends, the squared-off stalk and the small nub, so keep them crisp. On the classic banana the stalk is about 6 mm wide and the nub about 5 mm when the fruit is 100 mm long. Both survive in vinyl and card down to about 40 mm. In wood, the stalk is the part that chips, so sand it lightly and do not lever the piece out by it.

The ridge line along the fruit is a single cut about 2 mm wide. It suggests the flat sides of the skin and weeds out as one long sliver. If you want a plain banana with nothing to weed, use the silhouette.

Yellow, with brown ends

One sheet of yellow is enough for most projects. For a more finished banana, the layered design puts a brown layer underneath that shows only at the stalk and the nub, with the yellow fruit on top and a deeper yellow ridge. On the peeled banana the bare fruit is open line work, so cut the design in yellow and back it with cream card: the skin stays yellow and the fruit shows pale.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Which banana is best for a small sticker?

The banana silhouette. It is one solid crescent with a stalk and a nub and nothing inside to weed, so it stays clear at 20 to 30 mm. The cute banana with a face needs about 60 mm for the eyes to cut cleanly.

Do the bananas in the bunch come apart?

No. The three bananas overlap and are welded into one piece under a shared crown of stalk. The cut lines between them stop short of the edges, so the bunch lifts and places as a single shape.

Can I put a letter inside the banana frame?

Yes. The monogram frame is two bananas standing like a pair of brackets with an open middle. Place an initial in the space and cut the letter separately, or weld it to the bananas where they touch if you want one piece.
