The stem is the part to watch
A wine glass is a broad bowl balanced on a thin stem. In these files the stem is 5 mm wide when the glass is 100 mm tall, which is the narrowest part of every stemmed design. Vinyl and card cope with that at any sensible size. In wood or acrylic, cut the glass at 80 mm or taller so the stem keeps at least 4 mm, and run the grain along the stem. The stemless glass and the bottles have no thin parts and can go much smaller.
Where a glass holds wine, the wine is the solid part and the empty bowl above it is cut away, leaving the wall of the glass as a line under 3 mm wide. That wall is the first thing to tear when weeding, so pull the waste out of the bowl towards the rim, not across it.
On real glasses and bottles
To decorate a real glass, cut the design from permanent vinyl no taller than about 60 mm, so it lies flat on the curve of the bowl, and keep it below the rim where lips touch. The bottles have a blank label window: type a name, a date or a vintage year into it for a wedding table or a birthday gift.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which wine glass is best for a small decal?
The wine glass silhouette. It has no inside cuts, so nothing can tear or go missing when you weed it, and it stays readable down to about 25 mm tall. The half-full glass needs about 50 mm for the wall of the bowl to hold.
How do I make the wine red and the glass another colour?
Use the layered wine glass, which has the glass, the wine and the glint as three separate layers. Cut each from its own colour and stack them, wine on glass and glint on wine.
Are the two clinking glasses really one piece?
Yes. The rims overlap where they touch and the spark is welded over the join, so the pair lifts off the mat together and keeps its spacing. The join is the weak point, so in wood cut the pair at 100 mm wide or more.
