How the frosting is cut

A swirl of frosting drawn in one colour needs lines between its rolls, or it turns into a blob. Here each roll is set off from the one below by a cut line about 2 mm wide that follows its lower edge and stops about 3 mm short of the outside. Those uncut ends are what hold the cupcake together, so do not trim them when weeding. In vinyl the lines weed as thin curved slivers; pick them out from one end with a hook.

The pleats in the paper case are slots about 2.5 mm wide. They close up on a laser below about 50 mm tall, and on card they tear if the blade is dull. For small work choose the cupcake silhouette, which has no inside cuts at all.

Mixing tops and cases

The frosting swirl and the cupcake liner are also offered alone. Cut the swirl from patterned paper and the liner from foil card for a two-colour cupcake, or weld the swirl on top of a number for a birthday. The split cupcake leaves a band between top and case for a name, and the monogram cupcake has a round window in the case for an initial.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a cupcake in more than one colour?

Use the layered cupcake, which has the case, the sponge, the frosting and the cherry as separate layers. Or cut the frosting swirl and the cupcake liner from different colours and overlap them by a few millimetres.

Can I use a cupcake as a cake topper?

Yes. Cut the cupcake silhouette or the birthday cupcake from glitter card at 60 to 80 mm tall and tape a cocktail stick to the back of the case. The silhouette is the stronger of the two because nothing is cut from it.

Why does the candle have a short neck under the flame?

That is the wick, and it is what joins the flame to the candle so the design stays in one piece. It is about 2 mm wide, so cut the birthday cupcake at 70 mm or taller in card.
