Whole lemons and slices cut differently
A whole lemon is a solid oval with a nipple at one end, so it cuts cleanly in any material and at almost any size. The one thin part is the stalk that carries the leaf, about 4.5 mm wide when the lemon is 100 mm long. Keep that in mind for wood: below about 60 mm, choose a design without a leaf, such as the slice.
A slice is the opposite: mostly holes. The segments are windows, and what you keep is the rind, the hub and the spokes between the segments, which are 3 mm wide when the slice is 100 mm across. That is fine for vinyl and card down to about 50 mm. For earrings or coasters in acrylic, the spokes hold well at 40 mm and above, and the monogram slice, with its shorter spokes, goes smaller still.
Colour without layers
Lemons want to be yellow, and the easiest way is to back a slice with yellow card or vinyl so the colour shows through the segment windows. Cut the slice itself in white for a fresh look or in green for a lime. The two layered designs split the fruit and the slice into separate colours for you.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I use the lemon slice as a lime or an orange?
Yes. A round slice of any citrus fruit has the same structure, so cut it in green for a lime or orange for an orange. An orange usually shows ten segments, not eight, but few people count.
How do I put a lemon slice on the rim of a glass?
Use the half slice of lemon. Cut it from permanent vinyl about 30 mm wide and stick it so the straight edge runs down from the rim. For a paper straw topper, cut the round slice from card and snip one spoke to slide it on.
Why are the segments holes and not solid shapes?
Solid segments would be eight loose pieces with nothing to hold them. Cutting the segments out leaves the rind and the membranes as one wheel, which is far easier to place. The layered lemon slice has solid segments on a backing if you want them.
