How the shirt front holds together
A tuxedo is a black shape with a white wedge down the middle, and that wedge is the difficulty: cut it out and the two sides of the jacket are joined only at the bottom. In these files the bow tie spans the opening near the top and a strip of studs runs down the middle of it, so the two sides are tied together in three places. The strip is about 2.5 mm wide when the front is 100 mm tall and the studs on it are about 5 mm across. Cut the front from black and lay it over white, or press it straight onto a white shirt.
For a T-shirt or a baby vest, the bib of lapels and the braces with a bow tie are the usual choice at 150 to 200 mm tall for an adult and 90 to 110 mm for a baby. Both are mirrored, so fold the shirt down the middle to find the centre line before pressing.
Tuxedo, suit or braces
The tuxedo front, the card, the badge and the heart all share the same bow tie, studs and peaked lapels, and suit weddings, proms and New Year. The suit jacket has notched lapels and a long tie and is the everyday version, for Father’s Day and retirement cards. The two ties work on their own as the front of a card. The braces come with a bow tie or with a collar and a long tie, and the waistcoat is for ring bearers and magicians.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make a tuxedo shirt for a baby or a ring bearer?
Use the tux bib or the braces with a bow tie. Size it to about two thirds of the width of the chest, cut it from black iron-on with the design mirrored, and press it with the bow tie about 20 mm below the neckband. A second cut of the bow tie alone in red or satin can go on top.
How do I turn the tuxedo card front into a finished card?
Cut the panel from black card and a plain rectangle a little smaller from white. Glue the white behind the black so the shirt shows through the opening, then mount both on a folded card base. Cut the bow tie again in another colour and stick it over the first for depth.
Is the bow tie on these the same as the one in the bow set?
No. This one is drawn for the tuxedo: flared wings with a waist and a square knot, sized to bridge the shirt opening. The outline version here is a large single bow tie for colouring and photo props; the bow set has ribbon bows and hair bows as well.
