Choosing a crown for your project
The silhouette, the baby crown and the icon have no small parts, so they are the ones to use small: on a mug, a onesie or a cupcake pick at 30 to 40 mm wide. The classic, four-point, heart and prince crowns have gems cut from the band that are about 5 to 8 mm wide at file size; cut those at 70 mm or more, or the gems become fiddly to weed.
The king and queen crowns have the most detail and look best at 100 mm and above: shirt fronts, tote bags and cake toppers. The two tiaras are line drawings about 2 mm thick at file size. They suit foil, rhinestone templates and engraving, and need 120 mm or more in vinyl.
What to watch for when cutting
The balls on the tips are joined to the points by a short neck. In card and wood this is the first place to snap, so for a cake topper or an ornament choose the silhouette or baby crown, whose balls are largest, or cut at 120 mm or more. In heat transfer vinyl the necks are no trouble, but press the tips down well.
For a king and queen pair, cut both at the same height rather than the same width: the queen crown is wider for its height than the king crown.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which crown is which: king, queen, prince or princess?
There is no fixed rule, but by custom a king crown is closed, with arches meeting under an orb and cross, and a queen crown is open and more ornate. Here the prince crown is a low coronet with five equal points and the princess crown is the rounded one with a heart. Use whichever suits the design.
Can I make a crown to wear from these?
These are flat pictures of crowns, not wrap-round templates. The birthday crown strip is the nearest: stretch it to the width of your card, cut two or three, and tape them end to end to fit round a head, which is about 52 cm for a child and 57 cm for an adult.
How do I put a crown on a letter or a name?
Scale the crown to between a third and a half of the width of the word, and tilt it 10 to 15 degrees if it sits on a single letter. Weld it to the text if you want one piece, or leave a small gap and cut it in a second colour.
