How the folds work
Every fold line in these files is a row of short slits, cut by the blade along with the outline. There is no score tool to fit and no line type to set: load the file, cut it, and the card folds cleanly along the slits, curved folds included. The slits stop short of each edge, so the sheet lifts off the mat in one piece.
To assemble, fold the long centre line and the tab line, glue the tab inside the back panel and let it dry flat. Then push the two plain flaps in at each end, and the two notched flaps over them. The panels bow out as the flaps go in. To open the box, put a thumb in the notch.
Sizes and card
The files are 100 mm on their longer side, like the rest of the library, so scale them up before cutting. At 200 mm tall the plain box is 84 mm wide and 156 mm long and its sheet is 182 mm wide, which fits A4 or Letter card and a standard cutting mat. At 280 mm tall the sheet is 255 mm wide and needs a 12 inch mat.
Card of 200 to 250 gsm is right: stiff enough to hold the pillow shape, thin enough to take the curved fold. Thin paper makes a floppy box, and board over 300 gsm cracks along the curve. Pearlescent and kraft card both fold well; glitter card needs the glitter on the outside of every fold.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Do I need a scoring tool?
No. The fold lines are rows of slits that the blade cuts, so the card folds along them with no scoring. If you would rather score, use the print and cut version and score the dashed lines by hand.
How big a gift fits?
A little narrower than one panel and about two thirds as long as the sheet is tall. The plain box cut 200 mm tall takes something up to about 70 mm wide, 130 mm long and 25 mm thick.
Which glue holds the tab?
Double-sided tape or a thin line of tacky glue. Wet glue in a thick line warps the panel; let it dry flat under a book before you fold the flaps.
