Neck and legs: where a goose is thin
A goose is a duck made tall: the same heavy body, but on longer legs and under a long neck that it holds nearly straight. Those two parts decide how small you can cut one. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. On the standing goose the neck is about 9 mm wide below the head and each leg is about 5 mm, so vinyl and card hold it down to 40 mm tall and 3 mm plywood from about 80 mm. The feet are broad webbed wedges, which give a wooden goose a good flat base to stand on.
The wing feathers, the bill line and the eye are the only inside cuts on the farmyard goose, all slits about 2 mm wide that weed in a moment. The flying geese in a V are seven loose birds: cut them from one sheet and lift them together with transfer tape so the V keeps its shape.
White goose or Canada goose
Two birds share this page. The farmyard goose is the white one of kitchens and nursery rhymes: cut it from white or cream on a coloured ground, and give it the bow or the straw hat for the country look. The Canada goose is the wild one, with a black head and neck and a white chinstrap. In the one-colour files that chinstrap is a hole in the cheek, so cut the bird from black or brown and lay it on white. The layered Canada goose separates the black, the cream and the brown.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How is the goose different from the duck and the swan files?
The duck is low and short in the neck, with a flat bill. The swan has a much longer neck curved into an S and sits on the water. The goose stands upright on its legs with a thick, nearly straight neck and a short wedge of a bill, which is how these are drawn.
Do the flying geese in a V come as one piece?
No, and that is on purpose: geese in a skein do not touch. The file is seven separate birds set out in a V. In vinyl, weed round them and move the whole flock with one piece of transfer tape. For wood or card, cut them out and glue them down using the waste sheet as a placement guide.
Which goose suits a kitchen sign?
The country goose with a bow. It faces right, stands on a flat base, and the bow sits clear of the neck so it can be cut in a second colour if you cut the file twice. It pairs well with the goose in a straw hat for a matching set.
