Rubber ducks and real ducks

People who search for a duck want one of two things. The first is the yellow bath toy, which is three simple shapes: a round head, a flat bill and a body with a tail that flicks up. The rubber duck here is drawn that way, with only an eye, a wing and the line of the bill cut into it, so it works from 20 mm upwards in vinyl, card, felt and wood. Cut it from yellow and put orange behind the bill if you want two colours.

The second is a wild duck, and for most people that means a mallard. The mallards here have the long bill, the round head and the curl of feathers over the tail, and the white ring round the neck is a slit about 1.6 mm wide at 100 mm. Keep the mallards at 80 mm or more so that slit and the wing feathers weed cleanly.

Flying ducks and cattails

The flying duck and the duck among cattails are drawn for cabins, lake houses and mailboxes: both are bold shapes that read from a distance in black or dark green. The three flying ducks are loose pieces in three sizes, to be spaced out in a rising line like the plaster ducks that used to hang on living room walls. All the files are 100 mm on their longer side.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make the rubber duck yellow with an orange bill?

Cut the whole duck from yellow. Then cut the file again from orange, keep only the bill and stick it on top, trimming along the cut line that marks the mouth. For a quicker version, cut the duck once in yellow and leave the bill as it is: the shape is enough.

Which duck should I use for a hunting or lake house sign?

The flying duck or the duck and cattails. Both are mallards, both are single pieces, and neither has anything in it but the bird and the reeds, so you can add a family name or a place name beside them.

Are the three flying ducks joined together?

No, and that is deliberate. They are three separate ducks at three sizes so you can set the spacing and the angle yourself. The file keeps them in a rising line as a guide; use transfer tape if you want to keep that layout.
