Horns, beards and thin legs
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. A goat is all fine points: two horns that taper to about 2 mm, a beard, a tail and four legs about 5 mm wide at the cannon. In vinyl, weed towards the tips and burnish the horns last. In card the whole goats cut well down to about 60 mm. In 3 mm plywood or acrylic keep them at 120 mm or wider, or use the goat face or the head in side view, where the horns are thicker.
The breeds are told apart by a few parts. The Nubian has long ears that hang below the jaw and a curved nose; the pygmy goat is short in the leg and round in the body; the show goat has drop ears and horns swept back, like a Boer. If you keep another breed, start from the nearest one and remove the horns or the beard in your cutting software.
On the goat face, each eye is an oval with a level bar across the middle. That bar is the pupil, left in as a bridge about 2 mm wide, so nothing falls out when you cut.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which goat should I use for goat milk soap labels?
The Nubian goat or the nanny goat and kid. Both show an udder and read as dairy goats at small sizes. For a round label, the goat face fits a circle better than a side view: scale it to about two thirds of the label width.
Will the horns survive laser cutting?
On the whole goats the horns are about 4.5 mm wide at the base and taper to 2 mm at full size, which holds in 3 mm plywood at 120 mm or wider. On the goat face they are about 8 mm at the base. For key rings and ornaments, use the face or the pygmy goat, which has shorter horns.
Can I make a goat family with our own number of kids?
Yes. The family file has a billy, a nanny and one kid on a strip of ground. For more kids, cut the baby goat jumping or the goat silhouette at about a third of the size and overlap their feet with the strip before you weld.
