Folds that are cut, not drawn
A dress laid flat is a simple outline, and it is the folds, seams and belts that make it look like cloth. In these files they are slots about 1.7 mm wide at 100 mm, and every one stops short of the edge of the dress, so the bodice stays joined to the skirt and nothing falls out when you weed. The narrowest places are the straps of the sundress and the butterfly dress, at about 3.5 mm wide when the dress is 100 mm tall. Peel those from the hem upwards and support the straps with a finger as they lift.
The spots on the polka dot dress are holes about 5 mm across at 100 mm. They weed cleanly in vinyl from about 80 mm tall; smaller than that, use the layered version and leave the spots off. The wire dress form is all line, 2 mm wide, and is the one to choose for foil, engraving and pen plotters.
Which dress for which occasion
The evening gown and the lady in a gown suit prom, ball and gala invitations. The quince dress is for a fifteenth birthday, the flower girl and bridesmaid dresses for the bridal party, and the baby dress for showers and christening cards. The dress form, the wire form and the hanger are for sewing rooms, alteration shops and wardrobe labels. For a child’s dressing-up box or a row of wardrobe dividers, the sundress and the swing dress read clearly from across the room.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I add a name or a size to the dress hanger?
Yes. The hanger is drawn with a clear space under the rail, so set a name, a role such as "Bride" or a dress size beneath it in your own lettering and cut both together. At 120 mm wide it suits a garment bag, and at 60 mm a wardrobe divider.
Which dress works best as a card front?
The evening gown and the sundress are mirrored, so they fold neatly down the middle. Cut the dress from patterned paper, score the centre line lightly and glue only the bodice to the card so that the skirt lifts away from the page a little.
Will the lady in the evening dress stand up in a shadow box?
Yes. Her hem is a straight edge about half as wide as she is tall, and the figure is one solid piece. Cut her from card or thin wood and glue the hem to the floor of the box, or leave a tab below the hem to slot into a base.
