Sizes, materials and the tan markings
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. A rottweiler is a black dog with tan in fixed places, and those places are what make it a rottweiler in a single colour: a spot over each eye, the cheeks either side of the nose and a pair of marks on the chest. On the faces they are cut out as windows, so cut the design from black and put it on tan card, kraft paper or bare plywood, and the markings come out the right colour with no layering.
The spots over the eyes are the smallest cut-outs, under 10 mm long on the face at full size, so keep a face at 70 mm or wider in vinyl and lift the spots with a pin. The side views are heavy shapes with thick legs and a thick neck, which makes them some of the sturdiest dogs in the library: the standing silhouette holds in 3 mm plywood from about 70 mm wide, and only the end of the tail needs any care.
Which rottweiler for which job
The standing silhouette is cut level under the feet, for the floor of a shadow box or the bottom edge of a sign. The rottweiler with angel wings is a memorial design, a solid sitting dog with a wing and a halo in one piece, for a card, a plaque or a car window. The head on its studded collar is a badge shape for a kennel or a gate. The paw print badge is five loose pieces, so use transfer tape in vinyl or a backing sheet in card.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make the rottweiler black and tan?
Use the layered rottweiler face: a black head, the tan spots and cheeks, brown eyes, a charcoal nose that shows against the black, and a pink tongue. For the single-colour faces, cut them from black vinyl and put them on a tan surface, and the cut-out markings show tan.
My rottweiler has a docked tail. Can I take the tail off?
Yes. These are drawn with the natural tail, which hangs in a curve when the dog stands and lies along the ground when it sits. In your cutting software, draw a shape over the tail, subtract it from the dog and round the corner that is left on the rump.
Is the rottweiler with angel wings one piece?
Yes. The wing is welded to the dog at the shoulders and the halo rests on the top of the head, so it cuts and weeds as a single piece. The halo is the finest part, a little over 2 mm wide at 100 mm, so cut the design at 120 mm or more in wood or acrylic.
