Sizes, materials and the thin parts of a monkey
Every monkey here is 100 mm on its longer side. The faces are the sturdy ones: on the plain monkey face nothing is narrower than about 3.5 mm at that size, so it stays strong in 3 mm plywood, and it cuts well in vinyl and card down to about 60 mm across. The hairline, the nostrils and the smile are fine cut lines, about 2.4 mm wide on the faces. Weed them with a pin after the outside has come away.
The whole monkeys have long arms and a tail about 4 mm wide, and a face that is smaller than on the face designs. Keep those at 80 mm or taller in vinyl and card. For wood and acrylic, or for anything smaller, the three silhouettes are the ones to use: the monkey on a branch, the swinging monkey and the walking monkey have thick limbs and little or nothing inside to weed.
Hanging a monkey from something
Five of these designs come with their own branch, so they can hang from the top edge of a card, a shelf or a door frame, or be welded to the top of a name. If you want the monkey without the branch, slice the branch away in your cutting software just above the hand: the arm ends in a round hand that looks finished on its own. Mirror the monkey to make it face the other way.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make the face a lighter colour than the fur?
Cut the monkey from brown and put a piece of tan or cream card behind it. The colour shows through the ear openings, the hairline, the eyes and the tummy.
Which monkey works best at a small size?
The monkey silhouette on a branch has nothing inside it and stays clear at 40 mm. Of the faces, the plain monkey face has the fewest cut-outs: keep it at 60 mm or wider so the lines stay easy to weed. The pair of monkeys and the upside-down monkey have small faces and want 100 mm or more.
Can I hang the monkey from a letter or a name?
Yes. Use the monkey hanging by one arm, delete or slice off its branch, and move the hand so that it overlaps the bottom of a letter by a millimetre or two. Weld the two and they cut as one piece.
