Slices, lines and pepperoni

A slice is a simple, strong shape: a wedge with a rounded crust. The crust is set off from the cheese by a wavy cut line about 2 mm wide that stops short of both sides, so the crust stays attached. The pepperoni is cut out as round holes, the largest about 15 mm across when the slice is 100 mm tall. Put red card or vinyl behind the slice and the pepperoni colours itself.

A whole pizza cut into eight would fall into eight wedges, so the slice lines in these files run from near the middle to near the rim and stop. The uncut rim and the uncut centre hold everything together. The lines are about 2 mm wide at 100 mm, which weeds well in vinyl down to about 60 mm across. Below that, use a single slice.

For parties and pizzerias

The silhouette slice has nothing to weed, so it is the one for confetti, cupcake toppers and stickers at 30 to 40 mm. The pizza box and the pizza on a peel suit invitations and menu boards. The monogram pizza leaves the middle open for an initial or a table number, with a ring of pepperoni round it.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I get red pepperoni and yellow cheese?

Use the layered slice, which has the crust, sauce, cheese and pepperoni as separate layers. With a single-colour slice, cut it in yellow or tan and back it with red: the pepperoni holes then show as red rounds.

Will the whole pizza fall apart along the slice lines?

No. The lines stop about 5 mm from the rim and about 9 mm from the middle when the pizza is 100 mm across, so every slice stays joined to its neighbours. Weed the lines out as thin slivers and leave the rim alone.

What holds the pulled slice on the cheesy pizza?

Two strings of melted cheese that run from the middle of the pie to the point of the slice, each about 3 mm wide at the file size. They are part of the design. Cut it at 90 mm or wider in card so the strings stay strong.
