Mind the stalks

A cherry is two sturdy round fruits on two very thin stalks, and the stalks decide how small you can go. In these files a stalk is about 3 mm wide when the pair is 100 mm tall. That is fine for vinyl, where the backing carries it, and for card if you lift it gently. In wood or acrylic, keep the pair at 80 mm or more, or the stalks will snap where they meet the fruit. The cherry without a stem has no thin parts at all and cuts at any size.

Each fruit has a glint: a curved sliver and a dot cut from its shoulder. They make the cherry look round and glossy. At small sizes the dot is the first thing to go, so the sticker set leaves the glints out and keeps the shapes solid.

Red fruit, green stalk

Cherries want two colours. With a single-colour design, cut it once in red and once in green and trim each where the stalk meets the fruit. The layered cherries do it properly: the stalks and leaf are one green piece that runs a little way under the fruit, so there is no gap to line up. Add the pale shine last, or leave it off and let the background show through.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
