Spout, handles and where the can is thin

A watering can is a solid body with three thin things attached: the spout, the handle over the top and the handle behind. Here both handles are about 4 mm wide when the can is 100 mm long and the spout is thicker than that, so the garden can cuts well in vinyl from 50 mm and in card from 70 mm. The brace between the rim and the spout is the thinnest part at about 3 mm.

The can is level along its whole foot, which makes it easy to stand up as a layer in a paper garden scene. On the pouring designs the can hangs in the air, held only by the three streams of water. Those are each about 2.5 mm wide at 100 mm, which is fine for vinyl and card but too delicate for thin plywood under about 200 mm.

Seed packets, shed signs and spring cards

Watering cans go on potting shed signs, seed swap labels, allotment notice boards, plant markers and cards for keen gardeners. The watering can with flowers and the layered can are popular for Mother’s Day. The monogram frame has a round opening in the side of the can for an initial, and the gardening set makes a long header with the can, a potted plant and a trowel on one strip of ground.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Will the pouring watering can hold together?

Yes, as long as you treat the water as part of the design. The three streams join the rose to the seedling, so the can, the water and the plant are one piece. Weed the gaps between the streams last and lift the can end first.

Which watering can suits a plant marker?

The watering can silhouette or the cute watering can with a daisy. Both stay clear at 30 to 40 mm long, which fits the top of a lolly stick or a slate marker. The garden can with its band lines needs about 50 mm.

Can I change the flowers in the can?

Yes. The layered watering can keeps the can, the stems and the flower heads on separate layers, so you can delete the heads in your cutting software and drop in flowers from another set, as long as they overlap the tops of the stems.
