Silhouettes for windows and lanterns

A witch is known by her outline: the bent hat, the hooked nose and chin, the ragged hem and the broom. The flying witch, the standing witch and the three dancing witches are drawn as solid shapes for that reason, with no eyes or folds to weed. Cut them from black vinyl for a window, or from black card to stand inside a jar lantern, where the light behind does the rest.

The thin parts are the broom handle, the wand and the arms of the dancing witches. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side, and at that size the handles are about 3 mm wide. That is fine in vinyl and card. For plywood or acrylic, scale the witch up to 200 mm or more so the handle does not snap where it leaves her hands.

Faces, hands and feet

The witch face and the good witch are solid shapes with the eyes and the smile cut out, so put green, orange or white card behind them to choose the colour of her skin. The layered witch face does the same job in four separate colours. The witch feet in the air have a flat base that is meant to be hidden: push it into the soil of a plant pot or behind the rim of a bucket so only the striped legs show.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I colour the stripes on the witch stockings?

The stripes are slots cut through the leg. Glue a strip of bright card behind each leg, or lay the black vinyl over a strip of coloured vinyl, and the colour shows through every slot at once. Purple with green and orange with black are the usual pairs.

Which witch is best for small children?

The good witch with a star wand and the witch cat in a pointed hat. Both are round, smiling drawings with large windows that are easy to weed, and neither has the hooked nose or long nails of the older witches in the set.

Can I add a name under the flying witch?

Yes. The witch name sign has a blank panel about 100 mm wide and 30 mm tall under the witch. Cut your lettering out of the panel, or cut it from another colour and stick it on top.
