Cutting and weeding a spider web
A web is all thread and no body, so two things decide whether it works: how wide the threads are and how many gaps there are to weed. Every file here is 100 mm on its longer side. The classic web has threads about 2 mm wide at that size and around thirty gaps. The simple bold web has threads about 3 mm wide and fewer than twenty gaps, which makes it the one to pick below 60 mm. The fine twelve-spoke web has the thinnest threads in the set and more than sixty gaps, so keep it at 100 mm or larger.
In vinyl, weed from the hub outwards and move the web with transfer tape, because the outer ends of the spokes are free and will curl. The web in a hoop and the heart web have a rim that holds those ends. In black card or 3 mm plywood a web is stronger than it looks: every thread is joined at both ends, and the junctions are filled in slightly.
The corner, half and doorway webs have straight outer threads so that they sit flush against a frame or the edge of a window. Rotate or mirror them in your cutting software to suit each corner.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How big should a corner web be on a window?
Between a quarter and a third of the width of the pane looks right. Cut one corner web, then rotate copies by a quarter turn for the other corners. White or silver vinyl shows up best on glass with a dark room or night sky behind it.
Which spider web is easiest to weed?
The simple bold spider web, with six spokes and three rings. After that, the geometric web: its straight threads leave gaps with clean corners that lift out in one pull.
Do I need to mirror a web for iron-on vinyl?
Not for the classic, simple, fine, geometric or hoop webs: they are symmetrical, so the mirrored cut is identical. Mirror the corner webs and the ones with a hanging spider if you want them the same way round as the picture.
