Cutting a witch hat in one colour

A witch hat is a black cone on a black brim, so a single colour suits it well. The band is the only part that wants a second colour, and here it is cut as a slot: glue purple, orange or green card behind it, or let the surface show through. The slot stops about 3 mm short of each edge of the cone at 100 mm, and the square buckle lies across it as a bridge, so the hat lifts off the mat as one piece.

The simple witch hat has no holes and works at any size. The hat with the hanging spider has the finest parts in the set: its thread and legs are about 2 mm wide at 100 mm, so keep it at 100 mm or more in vinyl and scale it up before cutting it from wood.

The witch, her broom and her cauldron

The witch on a broom is a solid silhouette with no holes, which makes it a good window decoration: cut it from black vinyl at 200 mm or more and the nose, chin and shoe stay crisp. The moon version is the reverse, a disc with the witch cut out of it, so use a pale vinyl on dark glass.

The broom handle is long and thin, so cut the broom from card or vinyl rather than plywood unless you scale it up. The striped legs have a straight top edge made to hide behind something: a hat brim, a door sign or the lid of a treat box.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I add a coloured band to the witch hat?

The band is a slot cut through the hat. Glue a strip of coloured card behind it, or cut the hat from black vinyl and lay it over a strip of coloured vinyl. On the hats with a buckle, the buckle frame stays black and the colour shows through its middle.

Can I put a witch hat on a letter or a pumpkin?

Yes. For a letter use the tilted witch hat: scale it until the brim is a little wider than the top of the letter, overlap the two and weld. For a pumpkin or a round face, the witch hat from the front sits level and is the same on both sides.

Which witch works best as a window silhouette?

The witch on a broom and the witch in profile. The witch on a broom has no holes at all, and the profile has only an eye and a hat band to weed. Both are bold shapes that still read from across a street.
