Thick and thin
A flourish gets its life from contrast: the line is heavy where the pen would press on a sweep and light where it turns into a coil. In a file for cutting, the light parts cannot be hairlines, so every stroke here stays at about 1.6 mm or more when the design is 100 mm wide and swells to between 3 and 6 mm. That is enough contrast to read as penmanship and enough width to weed.
The spirals end in a round ball rather than a point. The ball is traditional in copperplate and scrollwork, and it also gives vinyl a wider end to hold on to.
Where to use them
Put a swash under a name, a double scroll above a heading, and the frame design above and below a monogram. The corner flourish is drawn for the top left of a page: rotate copies by a quarter turn for the other three corners. The border repeats, so place copies 100 mm apart at file size and weld them for a longer run.
For laser-cut scrollwork in wood or acrylic, the panel design has bars of one even width, about 3 mm at 100 mm tall, so it is the strongest of the set. Scale the finer flourishes to 120 mm wide or more before cutting them in rigid material.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What is the difference between an S-scroll and a C-scroll?
Both are a line with a spiral at each end. In an S-scroll the two spirals wind in opposite directions, so the line between them makes an S. In a C-scroll they wind the same way and face each other, so the whole ornament curves like a C. Scrollwork is built from the two.
How do I join a flourish to lettering?
Overlap the fine end of the flourish with a stroke of the letter in your cutting software and use Weld. Choose a point where the letter’s own stroke is about the same width as the end of the flourish, such as the tail of a script y or the bar of a t.
Can I mirror or rotate these?
Yes. A single scroll looks just as natural flipped left to right or top to bottom, which gives you four versions of each. The corner design is made to be turned through quarter turns to dress all four corners of a card.
