Taurus in the zodiac
Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac and its figure is the bull. By the usual tropical dates the Sun is in Taurus from 20 April to 20 May; the first and last day can move by one from year to year. Astrology counts Taurus as an earth sign, and its ruler is Venus.
The glyph is a circle with a pair of horns curving up from it. The constellation here is Taurus, drawn from the catalogue positions of 7 of its stars on a map centred on the figure, so its proportions are those of the sky. The brightest of them, Aldebaran, is shown as a five-pointed star and the others as discs sized by brightness.
Cutting the Taurus bull
The bull is the heaviest figure of the twelve, which makes it one of the easiest to cut. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side, and at that size the legs are about 6 mm wide and the horns taper from a little over 5 mm to a point. The part to watch is the tail, which is under 3 mm wide where it hangs clear of the body: in vinyl and card that is no trouble, but in thin plywood keep the bull at 120 mm or more, or pick the bull’s head, which has nothing thinner than its nose ring.
The Taurus glyph is a ring with a pair of horns, so its middle is a loose disc when you cut the glyph as a hole. The badge and the celestial card keep that disc in place with two small bridges across the ring; leave them when you weed.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What are the dates for Taurus?
By the usual tropical dates, 20 April to 20 May. The Sun does not cross into the sign at the same hour every year, so some calendars give a first or last day one earlier or later. No design here carries numerals: the badge has a blank band for the dates in your own lettering.
Which stars are in the Taurus constellation design?
Seven. Aldebaran, the eye of the bull, is the five-pointed star. From it one horn runs to Zeta Tauri, and the V of the bull’s face runs through Gamma and Epsilon Tauri and on to Elnath at the tip of the other horn. Lambda and Xi Tauri make the foreleg. The Pleiades are a separate cluster to the north-west and are left out, because they would be a loose piece.
Can I cut the bull’s nose ring in a second colour?
Yes. The ring is welded to the muzzle so the head cuts as one piece, but it hangs clear below the chin. Cut the head twice, once in the main colour and once in gold, trim the ring from the gold copy and lay it over the first.
