Cap, nut and the gap between them
An acorn is two parts, and the line where the cap meets the nut is what makes it read. On these files that line is a gap about 1.7 mm wide at 100 mm tall. It follows the rim of the cap and stops about 3.5 mm short of each side, so the nut stays attached and the acorn lifts as one piece. The same is true of the texture on the cap: the diamonds, scales and bands all stop short of the edge.
For small cuts choose the banded cap or the silhouette. The diamonds are about 6 mm wide at full size, so in card or wood they need the acorn to be 60 mm tall or more; in vinyl they weed well from about 40 mm.
Wood, leather and autumn tables
Acorns suit natural materials. Cut the silhouette from 3 mm plywood or cork for coasters and garland pieces, engrave the scaly cap and cut round the outline for a tree decoration, or cut pairs from leather offcuts for key fobs. For place cards, the acorn and oak leaf at 60 mm wide leaves room to write a name on the leaf.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I cut the cap and the nut in different colours?
Use the layered acorn, which has the nut, the cap and the bands as separate pieces. With any of the one-piece acorns you can also cut the file twice, once in each colour, and trim both copies along the gap under the cap.
Which acorn is best for a small charm or an earring?
The acorn silhouette. It has no inside cuts and no thin parts apart from the stalk, which is over 4 mm wide when the acorn is 100 mm tall, so it survives at 20 to 25 mm. Drill or cut a 2 mm hole in the cap for the ring.
Can I make a garland from these?
Yes. Cut several of the silhouette or the banded acorn, alternate them with oak leaves cut from the acorn and oak leaf design, and thread them on twine through a small hole at the top of each cap.
