Picking a flower for the job
For vinyl decals and iron-on, the bold heads are the safe choice: the simple five-petal flower, the retro flower and the seven-petal flower have no thin parts and weed in seconds. The tiered designs (double, rosette and dahlia) carry channels about 1 mm wide between their rings of petals, so cut them at 80 mm or larger and weed slowly.
For a laser, any of the single-piece heads makes a coaster, ornament or earring blank. Check the narrowest part on the design page and keep it at 2 mm or more in 3 mm plywood.
The paper flower templates
Five files here are templates, not pictures. The rolled flowers are spiral strips: cut one from 65 lb (176 gsm) card at 100 to 150 mm across, roll it from the outer end, and it makes a flower about a third as wide as the spiral. The layered template, the giant petals and the centres come as loose pieces to curl, stack and glue.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How big should I cut a rolled flower?
Cut the spiral at 100 mm across for a finished flower of roughly 30 to 35 mm, and at 150 mm for one of about 50 mm. Lighter card rolls tighter and gives a smaller flower; let the coil spring open a little before you glue it to the round base.
Which flower is easiest to weed in vinyl?
The simple five-petal flower, the retro flower and the flower silhouette with stem. Each has at most one hole and no channels, so there is almost nothing to pick out.
Can I use the outline flowers on a cutting machine?
Yes. Each outline is a closed band about 2 mm wide, not a single stroke, so a blade cuts it as a thin frame. For a pen or foil tool, the same file draws both edges of the band, which gives a double line.
