Side view or top view
The side view is the lotus most people know: an upright petal in the middle and pairs opening out to each side. In these files every petal grows from one foot, and the thin channels that separate the petals stop short of that foot, so the flower lifts off the mat in one piece. The channels are a little over 1 mm wide at 100 mm; for work under 60 mm pick the simple lotus with three petals or the five-petal symbol, which have wide gaps.
The top view is a ring pattern, eight petals to a ring, and reads as a mandala. It is the better choice for coasters, round signs and anything that will be seen from all sides.
Tips and thin points
Lotus petals end in sharp points, and the outer petals are slim. In wood or acrylic, sand or flame-polish the tips lightly so they do not catch. In heat transfer vinyl, weed from the foot towards the tips, so the points are pulled along their length and not lifted sideways.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which lotus is best for a yoga mat bag or a T-shirt?
The five-petal lotus symbol or the yoga lotus in overlapping lines. Both are open designs with little solid area, so the vinyl stays soft on fabric and does not crack when the cloth is rolled.
Can I cut the lotus and the lily pad as a set?
Yes. Cut the lily pad in green at about the width of the flower, cut the flower in pink or white, and overlap the foot of the flower on the middle of the pad. The layered lotus already includes a pad as its bottom layer.
How many petals should a lotus have?
There is no fixed number. A real lotus flower carries roughly fifteen to thirty petals, and drawings usually show five, seven or nine from the side. In Buddhist and Hindu art an eight-petalled lotus seen from above is one of the most common forms, which is why the mandala designs here use rings of eight.
