Caps, spots and stems

A mushroom is two simple shapes, a dome and a stalk, joined where the stem enters the cap. On the toadstools that join is marked by a cut line about 2 mm wide which stops short of the edge on both sides, so cap and stem lift off the mat together. The spots are round holes from about 6 to 13 mm across when the mushroom is 100 mm tall: back the cap with white or cream and they show as the pale warts of a fly agaric.

The stems are at least 19 mm wide at full size, so nothing here is fragile except the blades of grass, which end in fine points. For wood and acrylic, or anything under about 40 mm, use the mushroom silhouette or the sliced button mushroom, which have no grass and no small holes.

Not only toadstools

The morel has a honeycomb cap whose pits are cut out, leaving a net of ridges about 3 mm wide. The chanterelle has long gills running into its stem. Both are drawn after the real fungi and suit kitchen prints, recipe cards and foraging notebooks. They are drawings to enjoy, not a guide for picking: never eat a wild mushroom on the strength of a picture.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a red toadstool with white spots?

Cut the classic mushroom from red vinyl or card and stick it on a white or cream backing, which shows through the spots. Or use the layered mushroom, which gives you the stem, the grass, the cap and the spots as four separate layers.

Which mushroom is best for a small earring or charm?

The mushroom silhouette. It has no inside cuts, and the stem stays wide enough to drill or to take a jump ring even when the mushroom is only 20 mm tall.

Does the window of the mushroom house stay in place?

Yes. The window is a round hole crossed by two glazing bars that run into the wall of the stem on both sides, so the bars are part of the house. The door is a plain arched hole with a small solid knob joined to its edge.
