The tail makes the squirrel
A squirrel is recognised by its tail before anything else: a plume as long as the body, held in a tall curve with the tip curling away. In these files the tail has a row of small tufts along its edge, each about 2.5 mm high at 100 mm, so it reads as fur and not as a smooth tube. The tufts end in points and have no narrow necks, so they cut cleanly in vinyl and card down to about 60 mm. Below that, or for felt and thick wood, use the squirrel outline as a guide and cut round its outer edge.
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The slimmest parts of the sitting squirrels are the forepaws, about 3.5 mm wide, and the stalks of the acorns, about 2.5 mm.
Autumn projects
The squirrel on an oak branch and the wreath of oak leaves are made for autumn: door signs, table mats, place cards and the lids of nut bowls. Cut them from brown, rust or copper card, or from plywood at 200 mm and above. The running squirrel is long and low, so it suits a mantel banner or the rim of a mug, and the couple with a heart works for an October wedding.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Is this a red squirrel or a grey squirrel?
The ears have tufts, which red squirrels grow in winter, but in a single colour the shape suits both. Cut it from rust or orange card for a red squirrel and from grey or silver for a grey one.
How do I weed the tufts on the tail?
Pull the waste away from the tail, not along it, so each tuft is peeled from its base to its point. A weeding hook is only needed for the eye and the cut lines inside the body. The squirrel silhouette has no inside cuts at all.
Which squirrel is best for a child to cut and stick?
The cute squirrel with a big tail and the squirrel face have the boldest shapes and the largest windows. The baby squirrel asleep in its tail is a simple rounded shape that also works well in felt.
