Two kinds of bell

There are two bells in Christmas art and this set has both. The church bell shape has a dome, a flared lip and a clapper hanging below, and is the one that goes with bows, holly and ribbon. The jingle bell is the round one from a sleigh harness: a ball with a ring on top and a slot that ends in two holes. On the page the jingle bell is 100 mm tall with a slot about 3 mm high, so it survives being cut quite small.

The lines on the bells are thin slots about 1.5 mm wide that stop short of the edge. They keep the bell in one piece and show its lip and shoulder without a second colour. Gold, silver and copper vinyl suit bells better than any other subject in the library: cut the classic bell from mirror vinyl or metallic card and it needs nothing else.

What to watch for when cutting

The hanging ring at the top of each bell is a band about 3.4 mm wide at 100 mm tall, so it is the first thing to go if you cut very small: below 40 mm, use the simple bell icon, which has no ring and no holes. On the bells with a bow, the tails of the bow are parted from the bell by a gap about 1.5 mm wide. Weed that gap slowly, pulling away from the knot.

The ringing bell is the only design with loose pieces. Its sound lines are four separate arcs, so lift the whole design with one piece of transfer tape to keep them in place.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What is the difference between a jingle bell and a sleigh bell?

They are the same thing. A jingle bell is a hollow metal ball with a loose pellet inside and a slot cut in it. Fixed in a row to a leather strap for a horse harness, they are called sleigh bells. The jingle bell design is a single one; the sleigh bells design is five on a strap.

Can I use these bells for a wedding or an anniversary?

Yes. The pair of bells tied with a bow has no holly or snow on it, so it works as wedding bells on an invitation, a card or a sign. Cut it from gold or silver, and add your own names or date underneath in your cutting software.

How do I make a bell look gold in one colour?

Cut it from metallic or mirror vinyl, foil card or gold glitter card. The slots for the lip and shoulder let the surface underneath show through as dark lines, which is what gives the bell its shape. On wood, engrave the same file instead of cutting it and the lines stay as bare wood.
