Free hat SVG files

Free hat SVG files: a top hat, a bowler, a fedora, a floppy sun hat, a derby hat with a rose, a beanie, a ball cap, a bucket hat, a party hat, a birthday hat, a sombrero, and elf, jester, wizard and magician hats. Each hat is drawn on its own, with bands and seams cut as slots so that it lifts in one piece.

Bands, seams and ribs that stay in one piece

What tells one hat from another is mostly the crown and the brim, so each of these was drawn as a plain silhouette first and the detail was cut into it afterwards. A ribbon band is an open strip that stops 3 mm short of each side of the crown, which leaves two small bridges holding the top of the hat to the brim. Seams on the cap, ribs on the beanie and stitching on the bucket hat are slots about 2 mm wide at 100 mm. In vinyl they weed out as thin slivers, so pull them towards the middle of the hat and not across it.

The solid shapes go small: the top hat silhouette, the bowler and the party hat hold up at 30 mm for cupcake picks and planner stickers. The sombrero, the derby hat and the jester hat carry finer trim and are better from 70 mm. For a photo prop on a stick, cut the hat 180 to 220 mm wide from 300 gsm card and glue the stick behind the crown, not the brim.

Which hat for which occasion

The party hat and the birthday hat are for invitations, banners and cake toppers. The top hat, the bowler and the fedora suit weddings, moustache parties and Father’s Day cards, and the magician’s hat with its rabbit is for a magic show. The sombrero is for a fiesta table, the derby hat for a race day party, and the elf, jester and wizard hats for Christmas, carnival and book week. The sun hat, the bucket hat, the cap and the beanie are the everyday ones, for beach bags, fishing trips, team gifts and winter tags.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a hat photo prop from these?

Cut the hat 180 to 220 mm wide from stiff card, 300 gsm or heavier, or from 3 mm plywood on a laser. Tape or glue a 300 mm skewer or paper straw to the back of the crown so that it hangs below the brim. The top hat silhouette, the bowler and the sombrero make the clearest props because they read from across a room.

Can I put a hat on another design, such as an animal or a letter?

Yes. Open both files in your cutting software, tip the hat 10 to 15 degrees and lay its brim over the top of the other shape, then weld the two. The party hat, the top hat silhouette and the beanie work best because their bottom edges are simple curves.

Which of the hats are the same on both sides?

The top hat, its outline, the party hat, the sombrero, the jester hat, the bowler and the beanie are exactly mirrored, so they can be folded down the middle or centred on a monogram. The others lean, bend or carry a bow, a feather or a hook on one side.
