Cutting palm fronds cleanly

A palm is harder on a cutting machine than it looks, because each frond ends in a row of fine points. In vinyl that is no problem at 100 mm tall, but weed slowly and pull towards the tips of the leaflets, not against them. In card, a fresh blade matters more here than on almost any other shape.

If you need a palm under about 50 mm, or you are cutting felt, leather or thick wood, use the simple palm tree or its outline. Their fronds are smooth blades with no leaflets, so there is nothing fine to tear or burn away.

Palms in a scene

The leaning palm leaves the upper corner of the design empty on purpose: that is where a sun, a name or a date goes. For a two-colour sunset, the layered design gives you the striped sun and the palm as separate layers that line up when you stack them.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
