A shape turned on its middle
Every vase here is the same on both sides, as a pot thrown on a wheel is, with a level lip and a flat foot. The narrowest part is the neck: on the classic vase it is about 17 mm across when the vase is 100 mm tall, so the vase on its own is one of the sturdiest shapes in the library and cuts well at any size in vinyl, card, wood or acrylic.
Flowers are another matter. The stems are about 2.5 mm wide at 100 mm, and each flower head is joined to the vase only by its stem. Cut the vases with flowers at 100 mm or taller in card, weed the stems last, and for wood use the vase silhouette with branches at 150 mm or more.
Shelves, cards and paper scenes
Vases are cut for Mother’s Day and get well cards, kitchen and hallway prints, florists’ labels and pottery class certificates. The ginger jar has a round opening for an initial. The classic vase, the amphora, the three vases on a shelf and both flower pots stand on a flat foot, so they can be glued upright by a tab on a shelf or a windowsill in a paper scene or a shadow box.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I colour the vase and the flowers differently?
Use the layered vase of tulips. The vase, its bands, the stems with their leaves and the flower heads are four separate layers in one file. Cut each from its own colour and glue the stems behind the lip of the vase.
What is the round opening in the ginger jar for?
An initial or a short word. Place a letter inside the opening in your cutting software, make it wide enough to overlap the edge and weld it to the jar. You can also leave it open and back the jar with patterned paper.
Can I use the empty flower pot with my own plant?
Yes. The pot is level across the top, so any plant or flower file can be set into its mouth. Overlap the foot of the plant with the rim by a few millimetres and weld the two shapes so they cut as one.
