Antlers, legs and how small you can cut an elk

An elk is taller and heavier than a deer, with a dark maned neck and antlers that can be longer than its own back: a long beam swept up and behind the head, with six points on each side. Those antlers decide the size of the cut. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side, and for the standing bull that side is the height. At that size the tines taper from about 3 mm to a rounded point and the legs are about 4 mm wide above the hoof. Vinyl and card hold that down to about 70 mm tall. In 3 mm plywood keep a bull at 120 mm or taller, or choose the cow elk, which has no antlers to snap.

The bugling bull is the pose most people know from autumn in the mountains, and it is the sturdier of the two bulls because the antlers lie back against the shoulders.

Elk, deer or moose

Three things separate the files here from the deer and the moose. The antlers are round beams with long tines, never flat palms like a moose. They sweep back a long way, where a whitetail rack curls forward. And the neck carries a shaggy mane that hangs from the throat. For cabin signs, pair the elk and mountain scene with a family name, or set the elk antlers over a date.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How many points should elk antlers have?

A mature bull usually carries six points on each antler, which hunters call a six by six. Every antlered elk here is drawn that way: four tines low and in the middle of the beam, and a fork at the top.

Which elk is best for a wooden sign?

The bugling bull elk and the cow elk are the strongest shapes in wood. On the standing bull the antlers rise clear of the body, so cut it at 120 mm or taller, or glue it to a backing board.

Can I add a name to the antler frame?

Yes. The elk antler monogram frame is an oval about 80 mm wide with the rack on top. Put the name inside the oval so that the first and last letters touch the frame, then weld them into one piece.
