Pictures of a mailbox
The kerbside mailbox is drawn from the side, door to the right, with the flag standing up. The flag lies in front of the box, so a thin cut line runs round the part of it that crosses the box and stops at the pivot. That line is what lets you see the flag, and the uncut part at the pivot keeps flag and box in one piece. To make the flag red, cut the design twice and take the flag from the red sheet, trimming it at the pivot.
The valentine mailbox is the one to use for class card boxes: stick it to the front of a shoebox, or cut it large from card as the sign above the box.
A decal for a real mailbox
The mailbox decal is made to go on the side of the box itself. It is long and low, with an oval in the middle for a house number. Measure the flat part of the side of your mailbox, scale the decal to about three quarters of that length and cut it in permanent outdoor vinyl. Clean the metal with rubbing alcohol first and apply it on a mild, dry day so the adhesive takes.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What vinyl should I use on a real mailbox?
Permanent outdoor vinyl, the kind rated for several years outside. Removable indoor vinyl will lift in rain and sun. Clean the surface, apply above 10 degrees and leave it a day or two before washing.
How do I add a house number to the mailbox decal?
Type the number in your cutting software and place it in the oval. The opening is about 30 mm wide when the decal is 100 mm long, so one to three digits fit at a bold weight. Cut the number and the decal together so they share one sheet of transfer tape.
Why is there a line round the flag?
The flag sits in front of the box, and in a single colour the two would run together. The cut line shows where the flag ends and the box begins. It stops at the pivot, so the flag is still attached.
