How the patterned eggs are built

Every egg here has the same outline: 100 mm tall and about 73 mm wide, pointed end up. The patterns are holes. Each band, dot or petal stops a little over 3 mm inside the edge, which leaves a rim all the way round that holds the egg together. Cut one from card and it comes off the mat as a single piece, like a stencil.

That makes two-colour eggs easy. Cut the patterned egg from one colour and the plain Easter egg shape from another, then glue the pattern on top so the second colour shows through the holes. In vinyl, do the same with two layers, plain egg first.

Sizes and materials

At 100 mm tall the striped, zigzag, wavy and polka dot eggs have nothing finer than 2 mm in them, and they still cut well in card at 50 mm for place cards and bunting. The filigree egg, the flower egg and the basket have smaller holes: keep them at 80 mm or more in vinyl and at full size in wood.

For a real egg, scale a design down to about 30 mm, cut it from permanent vinyl and use the egg-shaped sheet left behind as a mask for dye. For a wooden hanging egg, drill or cut a 3 mm hole in the solid cap at the top, above the first band.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a two-colour Easter egg?

Cut a patterned egg from one colour and the plain Easter egg shape from another at the same size, then stick the patterned one on top. The bottom colour shows through every stripe, dot and petal. With three colours of card you can also put a strip behind a single band.

Which eggs can I use as stencils?

All of the patterned single eggs. The holes are the pattern and the rim keeps everything in place, so tape the cut egg to your surface and sponge paint through it. The striped, wavy and polka dot eggs give the cleanest result because their holes are large.

Can I put a name on an egg?

Yes. The monogram Easter egg has a plain band across its middle for exactly this. Type the name in your cutting software, size it to fit the band, and either cut it out of the egg or cut it from a second colour and stick it on. The plain egg shape works for longer names.
